Zhouzhuang was originally called Zhenfengli. According to historical records, during the Yuanyou period of the Northern Song Dynasty (around 1086 AD), a court official with the honorary title Di Gong Lang and the surname Zhou, a devout Buddhist, donated 200 mu (over 13 hectares) of farmland to Quanfu Temple for its use. Touched by his generosity, the local people named the area “Zhouzhuang” in honor of his family name.

By the Qing Dynasty, Zhouzhuang had grown into a bustling town in the Jiangnan region, though it was still referred to as Zhenfengli. It wasn’t until the early years of Emperor Kangxi’s reign that the name “Zhouzhuang Town” was officially adopted.

Zhouzhuang’s waterways form a grid-like pattern, with streets built along the rivers and connected by bridges. Houses are constructed beside the waterways, with river piers, covered corridors, archways over the streets, bamboo railings, and waterfront pavilions—all contributing to a serene and rustic atmosphere. This embodies the classic image of “small bridges, flowing water, and residential houses” unique to Jiangnan water towns. Zhouzhuang has preserved its ancient appearance remarkably well. Over 60% of the buildings in the old town are original structures from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, making the entire area a concentrated, large-scale cultural and historical site.

In addition to its picturesque scenery, Zhouzhuang retains many unique local customs and traditional lifestyles, reflecting the richness of Jiangnan culture. Visitors can enjoy Kunqu Opera and Suzhou Pingtan performances at the ancient opera stage, stroll along Zhenfeng Street to explore teahouses and shops, and take part in hands-on traditional crafts such as brick-making and bamboo weaving. They can also listen to folk tales handed down for centuries, including the legendary story of Shen Wansan, the immensely wealthy merchant reputed to possess a “Treasure Basin” and wealth rivaling that of the nation. Tourists can experience traditional customs such as rice cake pressing, fortune pounding, flower basket carrying, and lotus drum dancing. During major traditional festivals such as Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival, a variety of special cultural events and celebrations are organized, offering visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic Jiangnan folk life.

Only Zhouzhuang is an immersive multi-dimensional space drama jointly produced by the Zhouzhuang Town Government and China Oriental Performing Arts Group. Officially premiered in July 2024, the production draws deeply from Jiangnan culture and is set against the backdrop of the Song Dynasty. Using the innovative form of spatial immersive theater and housed within the unique architectural setting known as A Glimpse of Jiangnan, the show explores themes of soulmate connection, patriotism, and self-discovery.

Explore Zhouzhuang by sculling boat as you glide under iconic bridges such as Fu’an Bridge, Twin Bridges, and Taiping Bridge. Travel along the picturesque water alleys to reach the tranquil Xiwan Fishing Village. At night, immerse yourself in the unique charm of “Night Zhouzhuang,”where light, water shows, and traditional performances come together to offer a truly unforgettable experience.

The Twin Bridges, consisting of Shide Bridge and Yong’an Bridge, feature one round and one square arch—together forming the shape of an ancient Chinese key. For this reason, they are also known as the “Key Bridge.” Built during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1573–1620), the Twin Bridges have become Zhouzhuang’s most iconic landmark and were immortalized in Chen Yifei’s famous oil painting Memory of Hometown. With tranquil waters and timeless scenery, they remain a favorite spot for photographers and artists capturing the soul of a Jiangnan water town.

Constructed in 1742 by a descendant of the renowned merchant Shen Wansan, Shen Hall is celebrated as the “First Hall of Jiangnan.” With seven courtyards and five imposing gateways, the complex is laid out in strict symmetry and adorned with exquisite brick, wood, and stone carvings. The spacious corridors were wide enough for horse passage, reflecting the grandeur and affluence of its original owners. The main plaque, inscribed with “Song Mao Tang” by the late Qing Dynasty scholar Zhang Jian, adds significant cultural value to this historic residence.

Originally known as Yishun Hall, Zhang Hall is one of the best-preserved Ming Dynasty mansions in Zhouzhuang. It was once the residence of the brother of General Xu Da and was later purchased by the Zhang family, giving it its present name. A private canal encircles the hall, allowing small boats to dock right at its doorstep—perfectly embodying the water town lifestyle where “every household rests by the river.” The rear garden is peaceful and elegant, shaded by bamboo and dotted with ornamental rocks, providing visitors with a serene retreat.

Located within the historic Zhu Residence, the Zhouzhuang Museum is housed in a well-preserved early 20th-century building that once served as the town’s government office. The museum displays everyday tools and farming implements used by the people of the Jiangnan region, alongside rare artifacts from the Liangzhu and Impressed Pottery artifacts excavated from the bed of Taishidian Lake. It offers visitors a rich insight into the deep history and cultural heritage of Zhouzhuang Ancient Town.

Originally built in 1355 during the Yuan Dynasty, Fu’an Bridge is a rare example in Jiangnan of a multi-level structure combining bridge and pavilion in one. It was later rebuilt as a sturdy stone arch bridge by Shen Wansi, the younger brother of Shen Wansan. The bridge still retains original Wukang stone components, including a long slab that serves as a resting bench. The name “Fu’an” means “wealth and peace,” and this bridge remains an important link between the town’s north and south streets, standing as a silent witness to Zhouzhuang’s once-prosperous past.

Situated on Beishi Street, the Ancient Opera Stage is one of Zhouzhuang’s most culturally distinctive historic buildings. The stage is surrounded on three sides by private viewing boxes, and topped with a magnificent ceiling dome formed by 420 carved wooden phoenixes—known as the “Phoenix Caisson”—which enhances both its visual appeal and acoustic quality. Here, visitors can enjoy regular performances of classic Kunqu Oper* *i**es, such as The Peony Pavilion, experiencing the timeless charm of traditional Chinese opera in an authentic historic setting.

Kunqu is one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera and hailed as the “ancestor of all Chinese theatre.” It was also China’s first art form inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Flowing sleeves, lyrical melodies, and elegant movements bring Jiangnan’s classical charm to life in just 20 minutes.
